Classification of Animals at Buck Valley Ranch

Axis Deer

Buck Valley Ranch classifies animals into the following classes:

  • Trophy
  • Management
  • Cull
  • Doe

These classifications have served us well for a number of years. But, the development of our Whitetail breeding program has led us to expand and refine the classifications for Whitetail bucks. By breeding our Whitetail in a controlled environment we can ensure that only the highest quality bucks sire new fawns and can also control the release of animals onto the ranch. These characteristics not only give our hunters a selection of better animals to choose from but also change our objectives for hunting the animals not produced by our breeding program.

Dybowski-Buck Trophy animals are fully mature animals that have outstanding antler or horn development. These animals will score highly using Boone & Crocket or Trophy Game Records scoring systems. For Whitetail bucks only animals scoring more that 150 B&C will be considered trophies. Bucks scoring above 200 B&C will be classified as super trophies.

Management animals are mature animals that have excellent antlers or horns but are not expected to ever reach trophy status. These animals may also score highly using Boone & Crocket or Trophy Game Records scoring systems. For Whitetail bucks animals scoring between 120 B&C and 150 B&C will be classified as management, regardless of the number of antler points they have. Another classification of management Whitetail has also been created. Hill Country Classic buck includes animals typical of high quality native Hill Country bucks. This classification will include all mature bucks with 7 or fewer antler points, regardless of score and any mature buck scoring between 100 B&C and 120 B&C regardless of number of antler points.
Black Buck at Feeder
Cull animals are animals that have defective antlers or horns or animals that should be removed from the breeding population for other reasons. They may be normal on one side and defective on the other or may be mature animals that have small antlers or few points. These animals will normally be at least two and one half years old. For Whitetail bucks any mature animal scoring less than 100 B&C, regardless of number of points will be classified as a cull.

Whitetail, Axis and Blackbuck does are abundant and are available for hunters desiring to harvest additional meat. Presently Fallow does are not available for hunting.

It is noteworthy that because of the extensive nutrition program at Buck Valley Ranch these animals make excellent eating. Even our Blackbuck have proven to be excellent eating despite their reputation as very gamey.
