Scimitar-horned Oryx

The Scimitar-horned Oryx is a large and beautiful animal that once inhabited almost the entire North African continent. They are able to survive in extreme heat and are able to go for weeks without water. Although now extinct in the wild it has thrived on a number of hunting ranches in Texas.

It is a white animal with a chestnut neck and chest and long, gracefull, curved horns that may exceed 40 inches in length. Horns are present on both males and females.

Scimitar-horned Oryx provide hunters with both a magnificent trophy and a large quantity of truly excellent meat. Adult males weigh from 300 pounds to more than 400 pounds with females weighing somewhat less.

Hunting these animals has been somewhat controversial because of their listing as an endangered species. The Scimitar-horned Oryx has clearly demonstrated unconventional truth that by allowing these animals to be hunted the species will be saved. Texas ranchers have gone to great lengths to preserve and propagate these animals because there is a strong economic incentive. If these animals could not be bred, raised, sold and hunted for profit the thousands of animals on Texas hunting ranches would quickly disappear leaving only a few animals in zoos around the world.

Buck Valley Ranch, located in the Texas Hill Country, is home to a variety of native and exotic animals. The high-fenced ranch provides excellent habitat and superior supplemental feeding that allows game animals to thrive. Excellent lodging facilities, gourmet meals and expert guide services make this a destination for corporate groups and families. The facilities, the setting, the animals, the services and the commitment to high quality service all combine to produce an outstanding group experience centered around hunting.

Hunting the Scimitar-horned Oryx is just one option. A variety of deer including Whitetail, Fallow, Red Deer and Dybowski Sika are available in fall when their antlers are hard. Axis deer, Blackbuck antelope, Dahl Sheep and Bison are available year round. And, regardless of when you hunt all these animals are present to be observed in a natural setting.

While hunting for many of these species is normally done from Box blinds set in strategic locations near spin feeders, hunting Scimitar-horned Oryx is normally done safari style. The large, white animals are normally formed up into small herds that can be approached in a ranch vehicle to within 100 to 200 yards. They are not comfortable around human activity but yet are not skittish when a reasonable distance is maintained. Unlike many of the other species they will often stand and look at hunters from a distance rather than running off. This presents hunters with an opportunity to evaluate the animals, make a selection and take a carefully planned shot.

This is a very special hunting opportunity. This is a large and very beautiful animal. This animal is very rare. The trophy will be unlike anything anyone else has. It is completely unattainable in the wild. And, your hunt for this animal will have that additional benefit of helping to secure the survival of the species. The Scimitar-horned Oryx presents the hunting opportunity of a lifetime.

Come to Buck Valley Ranch for an outstanding hunting experience. Great facilities, outstanding animals, expert guides, superb meals, comfortable accommodations, a strong commitment to customer satisfaction and perhaps even a Scimitar-horned Oryx.
