Classification of Animals at Buck Valley Ranch
Buck Valley Ranch classifies animals into the
following classes:
- Trophy
- Management
- Cull
- Doe
It may be useful to understand how we make these
classifications.
Trophy animals are fully mature animals that have
outstanding antler or horn development. These animals will score highly
using Boone & Crocket or Trophy Game Records scoring systems.
Specifically for Whitetail these will be animals with ten or more points
and will be at least six and one half years old.
Management animals are mature animals that have
excellent antlers or horns but are
not expected to ever reach trophy status. These animals may also score
highly using Boone & Crocket or Trophy Game Records scoring systems.
In fact, a management Whitetail harvested in 2007 was given an
preliminary score of 176 B&C by the taxidermist. Specifically for Whitetail these will be animals with fewer than ten
points and will be at least three and one half years old. Management
Whitetails could score as high as the 130’s and 140’s B&C.
Cull animals are animals that have defective
antlers or horns. They may be normal on one side and defective on the
other or may be mature animals that have small antlers or few points.
These animals will normally be at least two and one half years old.
Whitetail bucks with 5 points or fewer are classified as culls.

Whitetail and Axis does are abundant and are
available for hunters desiring to harvest additional meat. Presently
Blackbuck does and Fallow does are not available for hunting.
It is noteworthy that because of the extensive
nutrition program at Buck Valley Ranch these animals make excellent
eating. Even our Blackbuck have proven to be excellent eating despite
the Blackbuck reputation as very gamey.
